13 REASONS WHY: BOOK REVIEW
I wrote a lot about the show 13 Reasons Why, but now I'm finally finished with the book, on which was filmed this wonderful TV show. I have to say that the book and show are interesting, and it was very difficult to decide what is still more interesting.
First I need to tell you about the plot to interest you: Teenager Clay Jensen returns home from school one day
to find a mysterious box lying on his porch. Inside, he discovers seven
double-sided cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, his classmate and
unrequited love, who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape,
Hannah unfolds an emotional audio diary, detailing the thirteen reasons why she
decided to end her life.
Her instructions are clear: each person who receives the
package is one of the reasons why she killed herself. And after each person has
completed listening to the tapes, they must pass the package on to the next
person. If anyone decides to break the chain, a separate set of tapes will be
released to the public. Each tape is addressed to a select person in her school
and details their involvement in her eventual suicide. (source)
The plot, as you already understood, very mysterious
and full of secrets and unexpected twists. It is normal and engages the viewers
and readers. From Chapter to Chapter we learn new details that are sometimes
able to confuse us. But even at the end of the book we don't get specific
endings and the story could easily be continued.
In most cases of adaptation are somewhat different
from the book. In the case of 13 Reasons Why in the book we can
read that told Hannah to understand her words even more accurately than in the
show. After all, the book provides detailed word Hannah. In the TV show we hear
the voice of Hannah, but we are given not all the content of the tapes, (all
the rest of the Directors decided to pass visual).
As in the book, we are given the full contents of the Hannah’s
tapes, we can easily understand the nature of each character. To understand the
character, as did Hannah. This has downsides, because Hannah is still something
wrong and say not exactly. But in the book we are given a more detailed
portrait of each of the thirteen characters.
In addition to the said Hannah in the address of the
characters, we also have the words of Clay, which also gives us some details
about the characters, and sometimes confirms the Hannah’s words.
Jay Asher has dedicated this book primarily teenagers,
he hoped that this tragic story of Hannah Baker will show them how not to do;
show them what can result accidentally (or on purpose), spoken word or action;
show them that you don't need to use people for your own purposes, and then
throw them, making them hurt.
In conclusion I want to say that the book left me in
complete awe and forced to think about some important issues. This book is well
suited not only to teenagers but also to everyone else. Parents of teenagers
should also read this book, because sometimes very difficult for parents to
understand their children. This book is a good help to understand some problem
of teenage life and what they can bring.
